Pathos investigates how we see ourselves, as women, and as humans – our mental health, our depression, anxiety, and connections to others. Using grit, grain, texture, ground glass, painterly blur, and multiple camera lenses, I obscure myself as the subject to reveal emotions hidden under the surface. By placing myself in front of the camera, I chose to share my vulnerability in order to normalize the dark-yet-relatable moments I believe we all share. Women in particular are held to beauty standards which can prevent them from sharing their deeper emotions, and I respond to this through displaying interiority, and the beauty of what is real. I hope to help others who have experienced a loss of self, and use this series to photograph more people and share their stories.
